bursting her bubbles
“‘…These so-called gentlemen waited twenty years to get up the guts just to remark, ‘Fine young woman. You know I always rather liked her’ while I spent twenty years utterly alone, fending off a never ending stream of dunderheads and clowns. Talk about misspent youth!’” She lamented from the bath while he shaved at the sink. ‘Youth is wasted on the young. God, they love to throw that one around. Meanwhile, courage, I notice far too often, is wasted on the stupid. I wonder why nobody ever shouts that truth from the rooftops?’ He thought for a moment, ‘Well, they’re afraid, aren’t they?’ She stared at the bathroom ceiling, irritated. ‘But who isn’t? I’m completely terrified. Every day of everything. And yet there I am. Perpetually throwing myself on the pyre.’ ‘Well, then’, he said thoughtfully, ‘by your own logic… perhaps you’re stupid.’ She looked at him, blankly. Then she laughed so long and loud the sound ricocheted off the bathroom tile. ‘You know, I think you’re right! Funny I never thought of that!” He glanced at her and restated dryly, ‘Like I said, dear.’ And with that, that she nearly burst her own bubbles with sharp peals of laughter.” 🧿
